Nelson graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor of arts in biology from North Park University. She holds four letters in cross country, and track and field. She was team captain in 2000 and 2001. In 2000, Nelson was CCIW All-Conference in cross country and All-Midwest Regional in cross country. She was an NCAA qualifier in cross country and 1,500 meters. Nelson holds North Park records for track events in 1,500 meters, distance medley relay and the 4 x 800 meter relay, and is in the top five all-time in cross country and 5,000 meter events. She was named Lincoln Laureate Award winner in 2000, and in 2001, she was Outstanding Senior and Senior Female Athlete of the Year. Nelson is an instructor of medicine at the Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education and serves as Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellow at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn. At Mayo, she has served as a teacher, administrator, published researcher and chief resident. Her hobbies include competitive distance running, rock climbing kayaking and skiing. She plays classical guitar and serves as a worship leader at Autumn Ridge Church, Rochester. Nelson and her husband, Caleb, are expecting their first child. Nelson was also honored with the "Up and Coming" alumni award in 2011.
