CHICAGO, Ill. -- Senior Nate Sommerfeld big two-game performance against Illinois Wesleyan last week received national recognition, as he was named to the D3baseball.com National Team of the Week on Wednesday morning. Sommerfeld is the second Viking to receive national honors by D3baseball.com, joining teammate Brandon Leidolph back on March 5.
Sommerfeld, a left fielder and designated hitter for the Vikings, went 6-for-10 in a pair of games against the Titans, cracking four extra-base hits. Two of those hits that went for extra bases were home runs at IWU's Horenberger Field on Friday night. Sommerfeld drove in nine runners and scored four times against the Titans, adding two doubles, to total seven hits in two games. He finished the countable week 6-for-13 with 5 runs, 9 RBI, 2 doubles, and 2 home runs.
Sommerfeld's 7 RBI in Friday night's win over the Titans is the second-highest single game total in the CCIW this season, behind Thomas Ward's (Carroll) 8 RBI game against Berea on Feb. 24.
This season, Sommerfeld leads NPU in RBI (21) and Hit-by-Pitch (7) and he's tied for the team lead in Home Runs (4) and Doubles (4).
This is the first D3baseball.com honor of Sommerfeld's career.
The Team of the Week is D3baseball.com's weekly honor roll, in its fourteenth season of recognizing the top performers at each of nine positions from the previous week. Players are selected from nominations from their school's sports information directors. This is the seventh Team of the Week of the 2025 season.
