CHICAGO, Ill. -- Adding his third weekly honor since this past Monday, sophomore outfielder Joe Perona was named the Honorable Mention Division III Hitter of the Week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) on Wednesday afternoon. Perona is the first player within the CCIW, Pitcher or Hitter, to claim recognition from the NCBWA this season.
Perona's week included 12 hits (seven for extra bases) five stolen bases, and he was responsible for creating 24 runs in four games - nine by him scoring and 15 via RBI. He drove in 12 runners in a three-game series with Carroll, ending the conference matchup with a 3-for-4 day at the plate with 6 RBI and a double last Sunday. He totaled four doubles, two triples, and a home run during the countable week from April 22-28.
In game two's win at home against the Pioneers on Saturday, Perona was 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored, including delivering a walkoff double down the left-field line in the 12th inning.
Earlier that game, Perona pulled back a would-be home run in right field, keeping the game tied at 2-2.
At a time of the season where significantly changing your averages (BA, OBP, SLG) becomes difficult, Perona saw his batting average jump nearly 40 points in the week, now up to .336. His 33 stolen bases rank 8th in Division III while his 5 triples are 27th in DIII. He was also named the CCIW's Hitter of the Week on Monday and was a D3baseball.com National Team of the Week awardee on Wednesday morning.Â
