CHICAGO, Ill. -- Senior Nate Sommerfeld went on a tear against Illinois Wesleyan University to open College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) play last week, leading to Hitter of the Week honors by the league on Monday afternoon.
Sommerfeld, a left fielder and designated hitter for the Vikings, went 6-for-10 in a pair of games against the Titans, cracking four extra-base hits. Two of those hits that went for extra bases were home runs at IWU's Horenberger Field on Friday night. Sommerfeld drove in nine runners and scored four times against the Titans, adding two doubles, to total seven hits in two games. He finished the countable week 6-for-13 with 5 runs, 9 RBI, 2 doubles, and 2 home runs.
Sommerfeld's 7 RBI in Friday night's win over the Titans is the second-highest single game total in the CCIW this season, behind Thomas Ward's (Carroll) 8 RBI game against Berea on Feb. 24.
This season, Sommerfeld leads NPU in RBI (21) and Hit-by-Pitch (7) and he's tied for the team lead in Home Runs (4) and Doubles (4).
Sommerfeld and the Vikings are back in action for a unique Monday night conference game at Millikin University.
