CHICAGO, IL (September 17, 2011) – The North Park volleyball team took second place with a 2-1 record at the Jim Coleman Tournament at Aurora University Saturday afternoon.
NP defeated host Aurora 25-21, 25-22, 25-21 and Roosevelt University 25-21, 25-19, 25-20 before losing its final match to St. Catherine University. St. Catherine claimed the tourney title with a perfect 3-0 record.
The Vikings strongest match was their tournament opener with Aurora, their second win over the Spartans in the last week. North Park accumulated 32 total kills, led by 10 from sophomore Shelby Switzer.
Defensively, NP was solid as well as it totaled 54 digs, led by double-digit digs from Switzer (13), sophomore Danielle Waldvogel (11) and junior Jessica Holmes (10). Freshman Aurora Johansen continued her double-digit average in assists also as she dished out 27.
In the Vikings second match win over RU, Switzer just missed a double-double in kills and digs as she threw down 11, but only eight digs. Johansen added 23 assists and Waldvogel had 12 digs.
North Park (9-5) returns to action Tuesday night when it travels to Rock Island to take on College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin foe Augustana College at 7 p.m.
