ROCK ISLAND, Ill. -- The North Park Women's Volleyball team suffered a five-set loss to Augustana College on Wednesday night inside the Carver Center. Senior outside hitter Shamyia Collier led all players with 16 kills in the loss.
Augustana jumped ahead with a 25-19 first set win before the Vikings caught their stride with 25-16 and 25-21 wins, heading towards a four-set road win. North Park hit .303 in the second set, limiting attacking errors to just two while driving a dozen kills. They also took advantage of five service errors and seven attack errors from Augustana.
However, in the fourth set, North Park's usually strong offense fell to just a .071 hitting percentage as Augustana broke through with 13 kills and utilized three service aces.
Things only worsened for North Park in the fifth set. Initially up 8-5 at the break, following a kill by sophomore outside hitter Payton Smith, Augustana would mount a late comeback. North Park's hitting percentage was upside down in the fifth set, dropping to -.167 with nine attack errors. Despite six service errors from Augustana, North Park couldn't hang on and the five-set win slipped out of their hands.
Four North Park players had double-digit digs in the match: 20 from Kharlie Simeona French, 19 by Carolina Aviles, 14 by Rian Hobbs, and 12 for Kendal Britton, who boasted a double-double with 36 assists.
Augustana's Mallory Coley had 11 kills while Abby Kirchner paced the serving game with five aces.
Despite the loss, North Park still has an outside chance of qualifying for the CCIW Tournament. The Vikings (18-10, 2-5 CCIW) need to beat Carthage this upcoming Saturday, November 1, and hope the Firebirds lose to Millikin (Nov. 5) before beating Carroll (Nov.7). First serve in the Vikings' match with the Firebirds at Tarble Arena is set for 6:00 PM CT.
