NPU Baseball mounts comeback win on Monday

Seven-run sixth inning lifts Vikings over Panthers

AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- North Park baseball was on the right side of a late-inning collapse, as the Vikings outlasted the Greenville Panthers, 9-7, on Monday afternoon.

Sophomore right hander Brandon Leidolph tossed two clean frames to open the game, featuring three strikeouts. The Panthers struck first, though, scoring three runs off four walks and two hits.

Sophomore Joe Perona led off the bottom of the third with a single up the middle before junior Alex DiVito got the Vikings on the board with an RBI double, cutting the deficit to 3-1.

Greenville answered back with a two-run homerun in the top of the fourth to pull further ahead at 5-1.

Leidolph started the 5th inning on the mound before looking to sophomore Zach Price, who came in to get the final out with a full-count strikeout.

The Panthers scored one run in the 6th, taking a 6-1 lead.

North Park had just three hits going into the sixth inning, then an explosive 7-run sixth put the Vikings back on top. With one out, junior Reece Arakaki wore a pitch and sophomore Carlos Martinez and junior Gio Lucchetto walked to load the bases. Arakaki scored on a passed ball before senior Ethan Raspolich drew another walk. Perona knocked a 2-RBI single up the middle. However, Greenville was still in front with a 6-4 lead.

After a groundout, senior Justin Swanson was hit by a pitch, setting up junior Nathan Sommerfeld for a huge two-out bases-clearing double. A walk by senior Bobby Bartlett set up Arakaki for an RBI single, giving the Vikings a 8-6 lead going into the top of the 7th.

Price made quick work of the inning and the Vikings' bats fell quiet again, aside from a single by Raspolich.

Greenville picked up a run off a single and RBI double to make it a one run game before sophomore Ethan Condit came in to pitch, recording two outs in the eighth.

North Park scratched across an insurance run after a Swanson double and Arakaki scoring him with a single up the middle.

Condit closed out the game, picking up his first save of the season, as North Park held on to the 9-7 comeback win.
