Vikings short game Pios on the road, move to 4-1 in CCIW play

Vikings blast four home runs in emphatic midweek league win

WAUKESHA, Wis. – North Park Baseball cracked 18 hits, including six for extra bases, en route to a 14-4 mercy-rule win over Carroll University on Tuesday afternoon. The North Park arms, Brett Ravitz and Jackson Nuese, limited the Pioneers to just seven hits, including no home runs inside the hitter-friendly dimensions of Frame Park.

A scoreless two innings, tossed by Ravitz and Carroll's Piper, took place before North Park's scoring began in the third inning. Senior shortstop Reece Arakaki singled, followed freshman third baseman Taylor Joseph's double to left center, advancing Arakaki to third. Junior right fielder Joe Perona then singled to left field, scoring Arakaki. Next, junior second baseman Rylan Kawakami hit a three-run home run in what would be one of two extra-base hits for him on the day. Senior center fielder Alex DiVito then singled and advanced to second on a passed ball before junior first baseman Enzo Vertucci reached on a fielding error, moving DiVito to third. Sophomore catcher Reyn Matsuzaki also reached on an error, scoring DiVito, and freshman left fielder Vinnie Marvucic was hit by a pitch, advancing Matsuzaki and Vertucci. Arakaki capped off the inning with a single, scoring Vertucci.

In the fourth inning, Perona singled and advanced to second on a balk. Kawakami doubled, scoring Perona. North Park added another run in the fifth when Marvucic was hit by a pitch and advanced on a wild pitch, followed by Arakaki's single to bring him home.

Carroll made it a game in the fifth when five free passes and a pair of Pio hits made for a four-run fifth. However, the Vikings were not far away from returning to form on the way to a short-gaming.

The sixth inning started with DiVito's single, followed by Matsuzaki's two-run home run, his first of two auto-trot homers on the day. Sommerfeld, Marvucic, and Arakaki all singled, before the RBI hit was delivered by Perona.

In the seventh inning, Kawakami was hit by a pitch before DiVito doubled. Next Matsuzaki hit a towering three-run home run, putting NPU in a position to get out of Waukesha in just three innings.

Junior reliever Jackson Nuese would oblige, getting the Pios out in order to earn his second win of the season.
