KENOSHA, Wis. -- North Park Baseball ran into a pair of buzz saws at Augie Schmidt Field on Saturday afternoon in a doubleheader loss to Carthage. The Vikings lost game one, 5-1, before a 14-4 defeat in game two.
North Park game one starting pitcher, junior right hander Brandon Leidolph, pitched well against one of the league's top offenses, allowing just two earned runs and four hits in 6.2 innings of work. He struck out five batters and the two earned runs he allowed were both solo homers.
However, Carthage's ace, Bryce Schaum, kept the Vikings pinned down. The hard-throwing righty worked a complete game and allowed just four hits, all singles, and fanned eight North Park hitters.
In addition to the solo homers by Callahan Tubbs, Carthage got three more runs on an RBI double by Tubbs in the eighth and a two-run homer by Knecht in the same inning, to secure a 5-1 win.
A difficult start for North Park in game two proved too much to overcome, as the Firebirds put up nine runs in two innings to allow Carthage's Ryan Scanlon to pitch with a comfortable lead.
The Vikings managed a four-run sixth inning thanks to an RBI single for sophomore catcher Reyn Matsuzaki and a bases loaded double for freshman left fielder Vinnie Marvucic, who hit several balls to the warning track in the doubleheader.
Unfortunately, it was too little too late as Carthage won, 14-4, in eight innings.
