Vikings Baseball stays atop CCIW standings following walkoff win over Augie

CHICAGO, Ill. – North Park Baseball enjoyed another walkoff win at home on Thursday night, earning a 3-2 win over Augustana College (9-9, 1-1 CCIW) under the lights of the Holmgren Athletic Complex.

Innings Breakdown:

  • 1st Inning: Both teams threw zeros on the board, as Augustana's Chance Carruthers and North Park's Brandon Leidolph took turns puzzling their opponents. North Park junior right fielder Joe Perona singled to shortstop in the inning, but was followed by a double play

  • 2nd Inning: Augustana's Ethan Sosnowski singled through the left side but was left stranded. North Park sophomore catcher Reyn Matsuzaki doubled down the left field line, but the inning ended with a strikeout.

  • 3rd Inning: North Park took the lead when junior second baseman Rylan Kawakami reached on a double, advanced on a balk, and came home on junior first baseman Enzo Vertucci's RBI fielder's choice.
  • 4th Inning: Both teams held their ground with no runs and no hits.
  • 5th Inning: North Park held a lead and had some momentum in the fifth but a caught stealing and groundout ended the innings.
  • 6th Inning: Sosnowski and Daniel Mosele both singled, but were unable to score as sophomore reliever Jackson Nuese punched out the final hitter of the inning. Marvucic singled up the middle but was left on base.
  • 7th Inning: Augustana scored two runs with a single up the middle by Grant Biggins, bringing home Carson Vitry and Cole Green. 
  • 8th Inning: North Park responded with an unearned run. To get there, Sommerfeld and Marvucic each drew walks before a failed pickoff attempt moved them into scoring position. Sophomore Rylan Li did his job, keeping the ball on the ground for an RBI groundout.
  • 9th Inning: North Park sealed their victory with another unearned run. With two outs, Vertucci was plunked with two strikes. Next, Matszaki chopped an infield ground ball to third, where the throw sailed high. Help in the outfield wasn''t there quick enough to beat Vertucci, who wheeled all the way around for the walkoff run.
