16 different Vikings see the field in North Park Baseball's 15-12 win over Dominican

Every Viking starter picks up a knock in final non-conference game of the regular season

RIVER FOREST, Ill. – There's was a little bit of everything in North Park Baseball's win over Dominican University at Wintrust Field on Sunday afternoon. The Vikings won, 15-12, as the game featured 30 hits and 14 different pitchers between the two teams. 

1st Inning

  • Dominican started strong with Downing singling to center field, followed with a single to right field that advanced Downing to third. Earley then hit a sacrifice fly to center field, allowing Downing to score. Krecu reached first on an infield error, allowing Helein to score an unearned run. Viking rotation starter Kevin Ayeski made his return to the mound, fanning two and allowing only two hits in a pair of innings.

3rd Inning

  • North Park responded in the 3rd inning when junior right fielder Joe Perona doubled to center field, followed by senior center fielder Alex Divito being hit by a pitch. Sophomore first baseman Reyn Matsuzaki reached on an outfield error, scoring Perona. Senior second baseman Rylan Kawakami singled to left field, scoring Divito. Freshman left fielder Vinnie Marvucic singled to center field, scoring Matsuzaki. Next, senior designated hitter Nate Sommerfeld doubled to left field, driving in Kawakami and Marvucic. Finally, in his first collegiate start, freshman shortstop Kupono Akaka singled to center field, scoring Sommerfeld.

4th Inning

  • Dominican scored three runs in the 4th inning. Helein reached on an outfield and advanced to third on another error. Earley hit a two-run home run before Krecu walked, and Schmidt reached on an infield error. Galvin singled to right field, loading the bases. Kalekas grounded into a double play, allowing Krecu to score an unearned run on the 4-6-3.

5th Inning

  • North Park scored three runs in the 5th inning. Senior catcher Graham Porter walked, followed by another walk for Akaka. DiVito singled to right field, scoring Porter and Matsuzaki singled to right field, plating Akaka and DiVito.

7th Inning

  • North Park continued their scoring in the 7th inning. Divito tripled to right field, followed by Matsuzaki singling to center field, scoring Divito. Kawakami reached on a fielder's choice and later scored on a balk, keeping a 14-9 lead.

8th Inning

  • Dominican scored three runs in the 8th inning. Davies singled and advanced on a throwing error. Downing walked, followed by Helein reaching on an infield error. Earley singled to right field, scoring Downing. Krecu reached on another error, closing the gap to 14-12.

9th Inning

  • North Park scored one run in the 9th inning when freshman third baseman Taylor Joseph singled to center field, followed by DiVito singling to left field, scoring Joseph.
Top Arms for NPU
  • Jaedon Bader struck out a pair and allowed just one earned to pick up the win. Garon Maxon was the top arm of the day, though, going three innings of shutout relief to secure his first collegiate save. The junior lefty scattered three hits and did not allow a free pass in his strong outing.

Top Offensive Players for NPU
  • Three Vikings had 3-for days: DiVito was 3-for-5 with a triple, Matsuzaki was 3-fo 3-for-6 with a double, and Sommerfeld was 3-for-5 with a double. Six Vikings had multi-hit days and every Blue & Gold starter collected at least one hit.
  • Seven Vikings collect a stolen base; Kawakami, DiVito, and Sommerfeld had two apiece
What's Next?

North Park (13-21, 8-8) has four games left, all of them CCIW contests. The Vikings next opponent is Augustana (17-18, 6-11), taking on the Vikings in Rock Island at 6:00 PM CT on Wednesday, April 30.
