Volleyball travels to King Arena for match with Wheaton

Thunder and Vikings face off on Friday night

WHEATON, Ill. -- Two College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) volleyball teams with single-digit losses will square off inside King Arena on Friday night when the North Park Vikings travel to face the Wheaton Thunder.

The Thunder (18-7, 1-2 CCIW) lost a pair of four-set non-conference matches at the Midwest Invitational, falling to Mount Union and Calvin this past Saturday. After losing in three to No. 6 Illinois Wesleyan, Wheaton enjoyed a sweep of Augustana before a five-set loss at Millikin University, where the fifth set went to the Big Blue 16-14.

Wheaton utilizes two setters in senior Lacey Higgins and freshman Reese Donahoe, who combine for 842 of the Thunders' 1,035 Assists. That number just north of a thousand is good for fourth in Division III Volleyball. With those set up numbers, it's no surprise that Wheaton also has some of the top offensive numbers in the country - the Thunder's 1,104 Kills are also ranked fourth in DIII as fifth-year middle blocker Ashton Major leads the conference and holds a national ranking of sixth with a .404 attacking percentage. Senior outside hitter Jordan Benford leads the Thunder with 262 kills and 2.98 per set.

The Vikings (16-6, 2-2 CCIW) are also looking to bounce back in conference action after dropping a pair of non-league contests to Simpson and UW-Platteville last Friday. North Park aims to get back on track in CCIW play after recently being on the wrong side of a pair of sweeps to Illinois Wesleyan and North Central.

North Park's strengths on offense continue to be multi-faceted, relying on kills and aces from a variety of players. The Vikings have six players with 100+ kills, led by 171 from junior middle blocker Meg Rothermel and 165 from senior outside hitter Shamyia Collier. Rothermel also leads the Vikings with 64 blocks and a .321 hitting percentage. The Vikings also have six players with double-digit service ace totals, led by 51 from senior libero Carolina Aviles and 45 from junior setter Kendal Britton. Britton's 763 assists rank 8th in the country while Aviles' 51 aces are 20th.

First serve in Wheaton's King Arena on Friday, October 17, is set for 7:00 PM CT.
