North Park Baseball sets single-game steals record against Augie in doubleheader sweep

North Park stole 10 bases in game one, a new single-game record for Vikings Baseball

CHICAGO, Ill. – North Park baseball remains the only unbeaten team in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin after taking a pair of games from Augustana in Rock Island on Saturday afternoon. The Vikings are an unblemished 4-0 in the CCIW, with wins over three different teams in the league. Additionally, the Vikings swiped 10 bases in game one, establishing a new single-game record at North Park.

Game One: North Park 8, Augustana 3

Augustana was first on the board in the second inning, forcing an early exit from North Park starter Kevin Ayeski when the Vikings from Rock Island manufactured three runs off two hits, two NPU errors, and a pair of free passes. However, after two outs to start the third inning, six Vikings from Chicago reached base safely to regain a 4-3 lead.

Junior outfielder Alex DiVito started the rally with a double to left field. Senior second baseman Justin Swanson singled home DiVito before swiping second. Junior outfielder Nate Sommerfeld drew a walk and consecutive singles by senior first baseman Bobby Bartlett, junior shortstop Reece Arakaki, and senior designated hitter Garrett Bragg gave North Park a 4-3 lead.

NPU scored two more in the fourth inning on a passed ball and RBI single by Bartlett, who manufactured another run with a sac fly in the sixth, and capped their scoring in the seventh when sophomore right fielder Joe Perona drove an oppo, RBI single to left field.

Meanwhile, junior lefty Brett Ravitz outdid himself again, putting together the best outing of his collegiate career. Ravitz navigated six shutout innings on the hill, allowing just one walk and four hits to earn his second win of the season. Senior righty Griffin Self finished the game out, tossing 1.1 innings of shutout relief with just one hit allowed as North Park took game one, 8-3.

Game Two: North Park 10, Augustana 9 (11 innings)

North Park was on its way to a short-game win in game two before Augustana battled back in the middle frames.

Augie's Alex Simon cracked an RBI double to left field in the first inning before North Park marked four runs in the second, and two each in the third and fourth innings. Sommerfeld and Bartlett were hit and walked, respectively, in the second before a flyball error off the bat of Arakaki brough in Sommerfeld. Next, continuing to come through in clutch spots, Bragg doubled Arakaki and Bartlett home. Perona ended the second inning scoring with an RBI single to left.

The third inning featured three-straight singles before a passed ball brought DiVito home. Arakaki drove a single to center, plating Swanson, before a double play ended the inning.

Four more singles in the fourth, including RBI knocks by Swanson and Sommerfeld, concluded the scoring for North Park temporarily as the Vikings from Chicago boasted an 8-1 lead and eyed a seven inning slaughter.

Meanwhile, North Park starter Brandon Leidolph was throwing up zeroes. After Augie's first run in their opening trip to the plate, Leidolph worked three shutout innings. However, as North Park's bats cooled, Augustana's luck began to turn. Augustana managed seven free passes in two innings while slapping five timely hits to tie things up in the eighth, 9-9.

For North Park, freshman right hander Luke Glaser was the calm amidst the mid-game storm. In Glaser's first outing of the season, Glaser was nearly perfect with 4.2 innings of shutout, one-hit relief, punching out seven Augie hitters without surrendering a free pass en route to an extra-inning ballgame.

North Park would deal the lethal blow in the 11th.

Following a flyout, DiVito was plunked before Swanson sent a double to left field, putting the duo into scoring position. Following a pitching change, Sommerfeld was hit by a pitch for the 18th time this season. A strikeout would put Arakaki up to the plate with two outs and a chance to take the lead. He would oblige, cracking an oppo single into right field to score DiVito.

Glaser sat the Augie hitters down in order in the bottom of the 11th, earning his first collegiate win as North Park secured the series win over Augustana, 10-9.
