Vikings Baseball secures series sweep in Naperville

North Park remains atop the CCIW rankings with a 9-1 record

NAPERVILLE, Ill. -- The North Park Baseball team hit the road on Wednesday to finish out the sweep of North Central on Tuesday with a final score of 6-3. Sophomore outfielder Joe Perona was 3-for-5 in the game to lead the Vikings while senior lefty Bobby Bartlett fanned six in his seven-inning win.

The Vikings went down 1-2-3 in the top of the first before Bartlett took the hill for NPU. The lefty, whose offensive heroics led NPU to a walkoff win on Sunday, started the game off with a clean inning while picking up his first strikeout of the day.

Junior shortstop Reece Arakaki knocked a one-out single up the middle before senior first baseman Garrett Bragg moved him over with a single to left. A flyout and hit by pitch loaded the bases for junior third baseman Carlos Martinez, who ripped a two-run single to right field. Perona knocked in Lucchetto with an RBI single up the middle to conclude the Vikings' scoring.

The Cardinals responded quickly, picking up two runs off of a pair of hits and a hit by pitch. However, North Park still kept a 3-2 lead heading into the third inning. Bartlett found his groove in that inning, picking up two strikeouts in his next trip out.

North Park threatened to score in the top of the 4th, loading the bases after junior catcher Gio Luchetto reached on an error before Martinez and Perona drove back-to-back singles through the left side. Unfortunately, the Vikings stranded the runners.

North Park picked up a run in the top of the 7th. Sommerfeld walked and swiped second base before Arakaki moved him to third with a groundball, preceding a Bragg hit by a pitch. Bragg drew a throw while attempting to steal second, allowing Sommerfeld to score.

Bartlett tossed a clean 7th inning before the Vikings tacked on in the 8th. Lucchetto led off with a single to right field before junior Joe Schaffer came in to pinch run. Martinez laid down a sacrifice bunt but reached on a fielding error by the pitcher. Taking advantage of the extra baserunner, Perona launched a double to right field, scoring Schaffer and Martinez to put North Park up 6-2.

Junior righty Chase Duffy relieved Bartlett in the 8th, allowing three singles before getting out of the jam. In the 9th, Duffy surrendered a single and a hit by pitch before sophomore Ethan Condit came in for the save. A single to right gave the Cardinals bases loaded no outs before Condit forced contact and got a flyout to right field. North Central traded a sac-fly for a run before Condit got the last out, picking up his fourth save of the season, as the Vikings won, 6-3.
