CHICAGO, Ill. – The North Park University baseball team nearly mounted a ninth-inning comeback at home against the Elmhurst Bluejays, but fell in the evening's game, 3-2.
Elmhurst wasted no time scoring as a leadoff walk put one runner on for Tyler Kledzik, who lofted one into the right field bleachers to put the Bluejays up 2-0.
However, this would be the only offense either team could produce through the bulk of the game. Elmhurst's Alex Kielion was nothing short of a buzz saw on the mound, navigating eight innings of scoreless work on the mound. The first hit he gave up was a sharp opposite field single off the bat of sophomore Bobby Bartlett.
For the Vikings, starter Brendan Russ settled in after the first inning. The North Park right hander tossed a career high eight innings and struck out a career high eight batters before giving way to Bartlett in the top of the ninth.
North Park put Kielion on the ropes in their final trip to the plate, as catcher Ranko Stevanovic became the Vikings' single season doubles leader with a one hopper off the center field wall. Next, first baseman Justin Woolbright hammered a low fastball the opposite way, peppering the bleachers in right field to put North Park within one, 3-2.
Senior left fielder Brandon Davis sent one right back up the middle to continue the threat of a comeback before Kielion was lifted for Bluejay closer Cole Bozzi. Unfortunately, Bozzi punched out the next two batters, sealing a 3-2 win for Elmhurst.
FINAL: Elmhurst 3, North Park 2
