DECATUR, Ill. -- The North Park University baseball team utilized three pitchers, flawless defense, and timely hitting to take down the Millikin University Big Blue 6-1 on Tuesday evening. The win was the fourth in five games for the Vikings.
The Vikings opened up the evening contest with one run in the first inning. Senior center fielder Jared Cantu reached on a single and moved up on a wild pitch. Junior right fielder Logan Peters slapped a single through the left side of the infield before the newly crowned College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Hitter of the Week, Jake Reinhardt, brough home Cantu on a single to left field.
Senior right hander Justin Woolbright got the start on the mound for the Vikings and worked three innings of scoreless baseball before turning it over to senior right hander Brendan Russ. Russ sat the first three batters he faced down as the Vikings were ready to extend their lead in the fifth.
Sophomore third baseman Jim Zay struck a liner into right-center field and sophomore first baseman Bobby Bartlett was hit by a pitch before Cantu moved the duo into scoring position on a sac bunt. Next, Peters cracked an RBI single to right field and a botched infield grounder, resulting in a fielder's choice for Reinhardt, plated Bartlett.
Millikin only managed one hit off Russ in the next two innings, before the North Park offense tacked on in the seventh.
With two outs, Peters singled into center field before Reinhardt brought him home on a single into right field. Next, after senior catcher Ranko Stevanovic singled through the left side to load the bases, Woolbright plated Peters on a fielder's choice and an errant throw from the infield brought Reinhardt home to put North Park up, 6-0.
Russ allowed just one more hit in the eighth inning before junior lefty Brett Brueske finished the game in the ninth inning, allowing just one run to secure a North Park win.
