BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The North Park University baseball team fell to the Birmingham-Southern College Panthers, 11-5, on Saturday afternoon.
The Vikings wasted no time in their first trip to the plate as junior center fielder Jared Cantu drove the first pitch he saw for a single and moved into scoring position on a single by sophomore left fielder Logan Peters. Next, senior shortstop Jake Reinhardt laid down a perfect bunt, forcing a bad throw from the BSC third baseman, as Cantu crossed the plate for the first run.Â
With runners at second and third, freshman first baseman Zach Lingk picked up his first career hit in a big way, smacking a two-run double to center to bring home Reinhardt and Peters.
The Panthers responded by loading the bases and skipping a two-run single into right field in their half of the inning, closing the gap to 3-2 in favor of NPU.
However, Birmingham-Southern tacked on three more runs in the second inning and one more in the fourth to capture a 6-3 lead.Â
North Park certainly put the nation's fourth-ranked team on their heels in the next inning. Reinhardt led off the fifth inning with a double, senior third baseman Justin Woolbright drew a walk, and Lingk moved both runners up on a sacrifice bunt. Next, senior left fielder Brandon Davis chopped an RBI groundout to plate Reinhardt and Woolbright scored on a balk.Â

Unfortunately, the Panthers tallied five runs in the next three innings to top the Vikings, 11-5.
