On a night filled with laughter, tears and a wide range of emotions housed in the Helwig Boardroom of the new Johnson Center for Science and Community Life, the six newest members of the North Park University Viking Hall of Fame were inducted as the Class of 2014.
William "Bill" Anderson (C'1969 – Football/Coaching), John Hjelm (C'1975 – Coaching/Swimming), Shari Hayden (C'2000 – Track and Field), Adam Sinovic (C'2006 – Men's Soccer), Brady Josephson (C'2007, G'2008 - Baseball) and Annika Safstrom (C'2007 – Women's Rowing) entertained approximately 100 honored guests and all shared stories of their time as student-athletes at North Park.
While many of the speeches were heartfelt and emotional, each inductee was humbled of receiving the highest honor from the Vikings athletic department.
Director of Athletics Dr. Jack Surridge served as the emcee, but each inductee was introduced by either a former student athlete of theirs (the coaches) or the coach both past and present of their particular sport.
One of the intriguing and comical stories of the evening was told by Head Men's Soccer Coach John Born, who deemed Adam Sinovic as a 'jungle cat' pouncing on an open field breakaway score in a game early in his career. William "Bill" Anderson was also taken back so much by the induction that when he received the news he was driving and had to get off the road.
In addition to this evening's ceremony, the 2014 Viking Hall of Fame Class will also be honored at tomorrow afternoon's football game against Millikin University at 1 p.m.
