CHICAGO, Ill. -- North Park University men's basketball has found their new assistant coach, as Coach Ed McGhee welcomes former Viking standout Tyshaun "TJ" Cobbs to the NPU staff. Cobbs returns to North Park after building an impressive coaching résumé at the high school level, bringing a strong background in player development, game strategy, and program leadership.
A familiar name to the North Park community, Cobbs was a four-year member of the Vikings men's basketball program from 2013-2017. During his collegiate career, he helped lead the program to a College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Championship and earned All-Conference honors as a senior. His time as a student-athlete laid the foundation for his passion for mentoring and developing players both on and off the court.
Following graduation, Cobbs quickly transitioned into coaching, beginning as a varsity assistant at Alan B. Shepard High School. He later moved to St. Laurence High School, where he served as associate head coach, before he was hired in 2022 to lead the Oak Forest High School varsity boys team overseeing all aspects of team development while fostering a competitive and positive culture.
Known for his emphasis on fundamentals, discipline, and leadership, Cobbs has developed student-athletes who have advanced to compete at the collegiate level. His coaching philosophy aligns with North Park's commitment to holistic student-athlete development and competitive excellence.
"TJ embodies everything we value in our program," said Coach McGhee. "As a North Park alumnus and former CCIW Champion, he understands the standard and tradition that make this place special. He is a genuine relationship builder, an outstanding basketball mind, and someone who has a deep affinity for North Park University. His ability to connect with people, develop student-athletes, and positively impact our culture makes him a tremendous addition to our program. We are excited to have him help lead North Park Basketball into its next chapter."
Cobbs earned a bachelor's degree in physical education from North Park in 2017 and is currently pursuing a master's degree in special education from Liberty University.
"Coming back to North Park as an assistant coach is a special opportunity for me," said Cobbs. "As a former player, this program helped shape who I am today, and I am thankful for the chance to return and serve the next generation of athletes. North Park has always felt like home, and I am excited to contribute to the tradition, culture, and success of the program. It is a blessing to come full circle and be part of a place that has had such a lasting impact on my life."
