DUBUQUE, Iowa -- North Park University baseball dropped a 4-2 decision at the University of Dubuque on Friday afternoon at Dan Runkle Stadium.
North Park struck first in the second inning, taking advantage of a walk, a hit-by-pitch, and a defensive miscue. Sophomore right fielder Vinnie Marvucic scored the game's first run on a fielder's choice by freshman designated hatter Reyn Ikenaga to give the Vikings an early 1-0 lead. Dubuque answered in the bottom of the third, scoring two unearned runs, and added single runs in the fourth and seventh innings to build a 4-1 advantage.
The Vikings cut into the deficit in the eighth inning. Sophomore shortstop Taylor Joseph reached base and came home on an RBI groundout by Marvucic, trimming the score to 4-2, but North Park was unable to generate additional offense down the stretch.
Joseph led North Park at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored. Junior catcher Reyn Matsuzaki added the team's lone extra-base hit with a double in the eighth inning. North Park finished the afternoon with just three hits and two runs.
On the mound, Jackson Nuese started for the Vikings and was charged with the loss after five innings, allowing three runs, none earned, while striking out eight. Garon Maxon and Zach Price worked the final three innings in relief.
Dubuque totaled seven hits and capitalized on North Park errors to secure the win. Dominic Pelizza earned the save by retiring the side in order in the ninth inning.
