DAVENPORT, Fla. -- North Park baseball enjoyed an important 5-4 win over Saint Scholastica on Friday morning in Davenport. The win marked the fifth-straight victory for the Vikings.
Starter Jackson Nuese put NPU in a strong position right away, retiring the Saints in order during the first and third innings and striking out five across those opening frames. He allowed no hits through the first three innings as the Vikings looked to build at the plate.
Saint Scholastica broke through in the fourth, capitalizing on two North Park errors to score a pair of unearned runs. Nuese limited further damage with a flyout and a strikeout to keep the Vikings within reach. The Saints added one more in the fifth, but North Park responded immediately with its most productive inning of the night. Sophomore right fielder Vinnie Marvucic opened the bottom half with a double and scored on junior left fielder Noa Fujitani's sacrifice fly. After senior third baseman Eli Johnson was hit by a pitch and sophomore second baseman Kupono Akaka reached on an error, senior center fielder Joe Perona singled to drive in Johnson. Moments later, sophomore shortstop Taylor Joseph delivered a triple to center, bringing home Perona and tying the game 3-3.
Nuese, who finished with 6.1 innings, seven strikeouts, and only two earned runs allowed, worked a clean sixth before a solo home run in the seventh by Markus Iasiah put CSS ahead 4-3. North Park turned to senior reliever Zach Price, who entered with two runners aboard and struck out back-to-back hitters to end the inning and keep things close.
North Park tied things up in the bottom of the seventh when Joseph singled, advanced to second, and scored on a line-drive RBI single from sophomore first baseman John Greenwood, knotting the game at 4-4.
The walkoff run would come through in the ninth. Perona reached on an infield error and Joseph singled to put a pair of runners on base. After a strikeout, junior catcher Reyn Matsuzaki put a bunt down that was misplayed by the infield, allowing Perona to cross with the deciding run.
Ethan Condit closed out the final two innings, allowing two hits but no runs while inducing weak contact throughout.
