Chicago, Il., -- After an electric double-overtime win over Wheaton in the CCIW Quarterfinal, the Vikings are slated to play Illinois Wesleyan in the Semifinals on Friday night. Wesleyan as the #1 seed and Carthage as the #2 seed awaited the results of Tuesday's first round matchups as both teams earned a first round bye. The Titans notched the number seed after posting a 13-3 conference record, allowing them to have home court advantage throughout the playoffs.
This will be the third time this season that North Park will play Illinois Wesleyan, looking to notch their first win over the Titans this season and advance to the CCIW Championship. Their first bout came in early January where the Titans bested North Park 79-59 behind a 24 point performance from All-CCIW 1st Team select Mason Funk, 15 apiece from Casen Lawrence and Karlo Colak, and 12 from Noah Cleveland; Cleveland was a unanimous selection to this year's All-CCIW 1st Team as a freshman. February 18th was the last time these teams faced off and it was the Titans again coming away with the 76-71 victory, in a game that Cleveland was inactive for. Funk erupted for 33 points to lead the Titans while fellow 1st team Viking guard Mike Vuckovic had 16 points along with 2nd Team member Kolden Vanlandingham's 19.
Ball security and shot making will be a point of emphasis for both teams heading into tomorrow's matchup, as North Park's aggressive defensive style will look to speed up the Titans and the Titan's length will look to disrupt easy paint touches for the Vikings.
The CCIW Semifinals will start at 5:30pm at the Shirk Center in Bloomington, Illinois when #2 Carthage faces off against #3 Elmhurst, followed by #1 Illinois Wesleyan versus #4 North Park at 7:30pm.
