Vikings swept by Cardinals, claim sixth spot in CCIW Tournament

North Park will play the third seed, Carthage College, this coming Wednesday in Bloomington

NAPERVILLE, Ill. – North Park Baseball was swept by North Central in their final regular season games on Saturday afternoon with scores of 3-2 and 5-4. However, thanks to a sweep of CCIW champion Illinois Wesleyan University earlier this year, the Vikings snuck into the CCIW Tournament as the no. 6 seed.

In game one, North Park tallied its only two runs in their first trip to the plate. An RBI fielder's choice by sophomore catcher Reyn Matsuzaki plated junior right fielder Joe Perona, who walked to begin the game, and junior second baseman Rylan Kawakami scored on senior designated hitter Nate Sommerfeld's sac fly. However, the Cardinals responded in their half of the inning with a two-run homer by NCC DH Parker Wyatt.

North Park hurler Jackson Nuese and North Central's AJ Kutcher kept the middle innings quiet before NCC center fielder Caleb Coberley delivered the final score of the game on a sac fly in the sixth. Viking reliever Ethan Condit punched out three in 2.2 innings of shutout relief, allowing just one hit in the 3-2 loss.

In game two, the Cardinals got off to a four-run lead in the first inning on Wyatt's two-run homer, and a pair of RBI grounders. The Vikings scored one run each in the third, fourth, fifth and seventh. Respectively: senior center fielder Alex DiVito's RBI double, senior Graham Porter's RBI groundout, Matsuzaki's RBI single, and a bases loaded walk for freshman Taylor Joseph. Unfortunately, the Cardinals had a sac fly in the second by Jackson Bland, securing the 5-4 win.

DiVito led NPU in game two with a 2-for-5 day, driving the Vikings' lone extra-base hit. Senior Kevin Ayeski came in for 3.1 innings of scoreless relief, punching out four, and Condit twirled a shutout inning as well.

WHAT'S NEXT?

North Park concludes the season with a 13-25 record and 8-12 slate in league play, claiming the final spot in the CCIW Tournament. The Vikings will face rv/#30 Carthage College on Wednesday, May 7, at Horenberger Field in Bloomington.
