North Park hangs on for 14-13 win at Butterfield Park

Vikings get a Good Friday win thanks to six extra-base hits, including three by Marvucic

CHICAGO, Ill. – One hit and one run seemed to be the difference in an offense-filled game for North Park Baseball against the Elmhurst University Bluejays on Friday afternoon. The Vikings had 14 hits and 14 runs while the Bluejays had 13 hits and 13 runs in NPU's 14-13 win.

In the first inning, junior right fielder Joe Perona doubled to left field and was brought home by sophomore catcher Reyn Matsuzaki's single, giving North Park an early lead. The second inning saw junior second baseman Rylan Kawakami's single to left field, driving in senior shortstop Reece Arakaki, to go ahead 2-0.

The third inning was explosive, with back-to-back home runs by Matsuzaki and junior first baseman Enzo Vertucci, followed by a series of walks and singles that culminated in five runs. North Park continued their scoring spree in the fourth inning with Arakaki reaching on an error, allowing Matsuzaki to score. The fifth inning added three more runs, with senior center fielder Alex Divito's single driving in two runs and Matsuzaki's fielder's choice bringing in another. In the seventh inning, Marvucic's double to left field drove in two runs, and Jepsen's single added another key run.

Elmhurst back a number of times, including a five-run fifth inning. A series of walks and singles, including a double by Malott that drove in two runs, and a single by Vercruyss brought in another. Elmhurst continued to score in the sixth inning with a double by Michels and a single by Vercruyss, driving in two runs.

Relievers Tommy Eck, Ethan Condit, and Zach Price navigated the final 3+ innings for Coach Luke Johnson. Eck secured the win, punching out three hitters in 1.2 innings of work, while Price was nearly perfect in the ninth: 1 IP, 2K's 0 H.
