Vikings Softball splits opening day action in Florida

Lafnear the "Viking of the Game" following CG win in game one

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- North Park University Softball opened their season in Winter Haven, Florida on Sunday by splitting a doubleheader with the Westminster College Titans and Gettysburg College Bullets. The Vikings beat the Titans, 5-3, before falling to the Bullets, 13-1.

In game one against Westminster (0-1), the Vikings rattled off three runs in their first half inning of the season. Junior left fielder Eden Baker singled and swiped second before junior shortstop Kayla Lorenz brought Baker in with a single. Next, sophomore designated player Bella Frohwirth doubled to score Lorenz and junior third baseman Kathryn Keehn capped the scoring with an RBI single.

In the circle for the Vikings, junior Maya Lafnear threw zeroes on the board in four of seven innings. The Titans tallied two runs in the second and an unearned run in the third, but the Vikings would pull ahead in the sixth.

In that sixth inning, junior right fielder Sydney Snyder drew a walk before junior catcher Katie Patton's single moved her up a base. Senior second baseman Maddy Tan plated Snyder with a single and junior center fielder Kayla Sapolu followed suit with an RBI single of her own to give NPU the eventual 5-3 win.

Lafnear secured the first win of the season in her complete game, allowing just two earned runs and seven hits.

In game two against Gettysburg (5-2), the Vikings ran into a buzz saw in the Bullets' starting pitcher, Audrey Wright. Wright allowed just one hit through four innings - a single by Keehn in the second. Baker was the game two pitcher and held the 2024 NCAA playoff team to just one run through three innings, but a 12-run fourth swiftly put the game out of reach. Five hits, including a three run home run for Elie Lardiere, and four Viking errors was the catalyst for a 13-1 NPU loss.

Tan and Keehn each finished the day with a pair of hits while Frohwirth's double was NPU's lone strike for extra bases.
