Big pitching performances, timely knocks from newcomers lead to Monday sweep for Softball

Vikings pick up a pair of wins on second day of Florida trip

Thank you to Mya Lorenz for the pictures

LEESBURG, Fla. -- North Park Softball enjoyed a doubleheader sweep on Monday evening, earning wins over the Loras College Duhawks, 5-3, in nine innings, and Saint Mary's College Belles, 9-0, in five innings. Junior Maya Lafnear tossed all nine innings for her second win of 2025 while junior Eden Baker threw a five-inning one hitter in game two.

Game One: North Park 5, Loras 3

North Park had to play catch up in game one against the Duhawks. Two scoreless innings gave way to single-run scoring frames in the third and fourth on an RBI double and RBI groundout to put Loras ahead, 2-0.

The Duhakws' Kalli Henning held the Vikings scoreless through five, but some clutch, two-out pinch hitting would put the Vikings out front in the sixth.

Baker started that rallying sixth inning off with a single before swiping second. A pair of strikeouts put freshman Raquel Hare up to the plate with two outs, cracking an RBI single for her first collegiate hit.

Next, junior third baseman Kathryn Keehn dropped down a bunt before another freshman pinch hitter, LilyAnn Lutz, also enjoyed her first collegiate hit with a two-run double to knot things at three all.

The Duhawks conjured up some two-out magic of their own in the bottom of the seventh when Martinelli tied things up with an RBI single, sending the game to extra innings.

A scoreless eighth would give the Vikings another go in the top of the ninth, where small ball reigned supreme.

Keehn started on second base to begin the inning before moving to third on senior second baseman Maddy Tan's bunt single. Junior left fielder Sydney Snyder plated Keehn on a fielder's choice before junior catcher Katie Patton loaded the bases with another bunt single. Freshman Bella Frohwirth drew a pinch hit walk to score the second run of the inning, as the Vikings went into the bottom of the ninth with a 5-3 lead.

The Duhawks threatened with runners on the corners and two outs, but a lineout to center field ended the game as NPU secured the 5-3 victory.

Game Two: North Park 9, Saint Mary's (IN) 0

A much quicker second game of the day was headlined by Baker's performance in the circle. The two-way player allowed just one hit through five innings - a grounder through the right side in the second inning.

The Vikings scored one run each in the first and third innings on junior shortstop Kayla Lorenz' RBI triple to center field and Keehn's RBI single to right.

NPU erupted for seven more runs in the fourth on six hits, including a pair of two-run triples for Baker and Patton.

With mercy rule looming, Baker closed things down in the fifth inning to secure her first win of 2025 in the 9-0 short-game win.
