RIVER FOREST, Ill. -- The Concordia-Chicago Cougars (9-8) triumphed over the North Park Vikings (4-12) in a high-scoring slugfest at CUC Baseball Stadium on Monday afternoon. The game featured 26 runs and as many hits, as the Vikings fell to the Cougars 16-10.
Scoring Recap
-
2nd Inning:
- North Park: The Vikings scored two runs, capitalizing on a walk by senior DH Nate Sommerfeld and a single by sophomore left fielder Rylan Li. An error by Concordia-Chicago's first baseman allowed another run to score, followed by a sacrifice fly by junior right fielder Joe Perona, bringing the score to 2-1 NPU.
- Concordia-Chicago: The Cougars responded with a massive eight-run inning. T. Krater tripled to left center, followed by RBI singles from C. Buckley and Y. Boswell. T. Dorsch hit a three-run homer to left center, and T. Krater later added a two-run homer, making the score 9-2.
-
3rd Inning:
- North Park: The Vikings added two more runs with a two-run homer by junior first baseman Enzo Vertucci, the first of his career, closing the gap to 9-4.
- Concordia-Chicago: The Cougars continued their offensive onslaught with five more runs. B. Mahler hit a three-run double to right center, extending the lead to 14-4.
-
5th Inning:
- North Park: The Vikings had a six-run inning, taking advantage of errors and timely hitting. Junior second baseman Rylan Kawakami's two-run single and senior center fielder Alex Divito's RBI single were key hits as the Vikings scored all six runs in the inning with two outs.
Unfortunately, that big fifth inning would fall flat in the next four trips to the plate for the Vikings. On the mound, eight different North Park pitchers saw action. Junior righty Jackson Nuese was dominant in his two innings of work, tossing zeros across all stat categories (H, R, BB) with three strikeouts.
