CHICAGO, Ill. -- North Park Women's Soccer (9-6, 6-0) faced off against North Central College (11-5, 6-0) on Saturday night in a match that had #1 seed implications for the CCIW playoffs and the CCIW conference championship. A win for either team tonight assured them a share of the conference title. It was the Cardinals that would take that crown, earning a 3-0 victory over the homestanding Vikings.
The Cardinals took an early lead with two quick goals in the first half, with the first goal coming in the 8th minute from Gabriella Mattio. Moments later, Jordan Lange extended the lead with a penalty kick goal at 12:10. The Vikings' defense and MacRitchie stepped up to minimize the damage for the rest of the first half, with MacRitchie logging one save and the defense earning a team save. Offensively, North Park managed two shots in the first half, including one shot on goal from Hannah Björkegren that was saved by North Central's goalkeeper, Lily Mattison.
In the second half, the Vikings came out strong, creating more opportunities with seven shots in the half and tightening their defense. Midfielder Maja Applequist was a consistent presence on the attack for North Park, finishing the game with a team-high three shots, though none were on goal. Sofia Svensson also tested the North Central defense with a shot on goal that was saved by Mattison in the 72nd minute. MacRitchie was instrumental in keeping the Vikings within striking distance in the second half, posting four of her five saves in that time while facing a total of 18 shots in the contest, recording an impressive five saves against a formidable North Central offense. North Central's only goal of the second half came in the 65th minute, with Lange scoring her second goal of the match, assisted by Yazmin Martinez to extend their lead to 3-0.
Though the Vikings' six game win streak came to an end tonight, they are still guaranteed a top-two spot in the CCIW tournament and have a chance to earn a share of the conference title next Wednesday, hoping for a North Central loss. North Park moves to 9-7 overall and 6-1 in CCIW play and will conclude their regular season in Kenosha against Carthage College on Wednesday, October 29th at 7pm.
