CHICAGO, Ill. -- The North Park Women's Soccer team (9-7, 6-1) made the trip north to Kenosha, Wisconsin for their last regular season game to take on Carthage College (7-6-4, 3-2-2). The Vikings came up short, 1-0, but their second-place finish in the conference race continues a new trend of program records for Coach Emma Woodley and crew.
Both teams couldn't punch in any goals in the first half, however all seven of the Firebirds' shots were on goal and all seven were saved by Vikings' keeper Paige MacRitchie. North Park put up six shots in the first half seeing three of them on goal, two from midfielder Hannah Björkegren and one from midfielder Maja Applequist.
Carthage took a 1-0 lead early in the second half when Emma Amberg found Malie Cassel for a breakaway goal in which Cassel sent a chip shot over the approaching MacRitchie as she tried to block the shot early in the box. The shot count remained even throughout the match at 13 apiece with the Vikings putting seven on goal and the Firebirds nine while Carthage had three times the number of corners, 9-3.
North Park would wind up losing the Wednesday night match 1-0, but they have secured the second seed in the CCIW Tournament. More notably, second place in the CCIW represents a new program record for NPU Women's Soccer, besting their most recent finish of fourth in 2011. Additionally, Sofia Svensson is both the goals and points champion of the league, only the second time ever that a Viking has won the title in either category, joing Coach Woodley's titles in 2014. Sofia's 8 goals outpaced Jordan Lange of North Central, who ended up with 5, and Sofia's 17 points bested Lange's 15. Caroline Sjøstedt also becomes the first Viking to win the assist title, boasting 6 on the season.
On Wednesday, November 5, the Vikings will host the winner of the Carthage v. Illinois Wesleyan match that takes place this weekend, hosting their first-ever conference tournament match at the Holmgren Athletic Complex.
