Vikings go undefeated in Puerto Rico trip

Clean 4-0 slate for NPU heading back to Chicago

GUAYNABO, Puerto Rico -- The North Park University Vikings Women's Volleyball team continued their stellar season with two more victories, defeating the Widener University Pride and the Ohio Wesleyan University Bishops on Sunday afternoon.

Game 1: Vikings vs. Pride

The Vikings won their first match of the day against Widener University, winning in straight sets with scores of 25-18, 25-18, and 25-13. Carolina Aviles led the charge, recording 24 digs, which earned her the 4th spot on North Park's all-time leaderboard for digs in a 3-set match. The team's overall defensive performance was equally impressive, with the Vikings amassing 68 digs, ranking them 9th all-time in the team category for 3-set matches.

Adriana Rodriguez led the team offensively with 11 kills, while Meg Rothermel added 9, and Payton Smith contributed 5. On the service line, Aviles delivered 3 aces, with Rodriguez and Kharlie Simeona-French each adding one. The Vikings' net presence was highlighted by Ashley Belanger's 3 blocks, supported by Rodriguez and Annaliese Rottman with 2 apiece. Mary Kate Giesen worked the offense with 26 assists, bringing the team to a decisive victory.

Game 2: Vikings vs. Bishops

The second match against Ohio Wesleyan University proved to be a tougher challenge, but the Vikings emerged victorious in a five-set battle: 16-25, 25-20, 25-27, 25-23, and 15-9. Adriana Rodriguez was once again the driving force behind North Park's success, delivering a remarkable 27 kills, tying her for 9th all-time in 5-set matches. She also contributed 5 aces, good for 9th on the aces leaderboard for 5-set matches at NPU.

Carolina Aviles continued her impressive defensive play, recording 32 digs, which ties her for 9th on the all-time digs list for 5-set matches. As a team, the Vikings recorded 61 kills, tying for 10th all-time in 5-set matches, and their 100 digs secured them 10th place on the team digs leaderboard for 5-set matches. Last but not least, their 20 aces tied for second all-time in progarm history.

Rodriguez's 27 kills were complemented by contributions from Meg Rothermel with 8 kills and Rian Hobbs with 7. The Vikings' service game was strong, with Rodriguez, Simeona-French, and Aviles combining for 12 aces. Kendal Britton contributed 41 assists, while Aviles and Simeona-French anchored the defense with 32 and 19 digs, respectively. Additionally, Kendal Britton secured her first collegiate double-double with 41 assists and 10 digs.

The Vikings return to action Thursday, September 5 for their home opener against Benedictine University in Carlson Gym in Chicago, IL. Start time is set for 6:00 p.m.
