Vikings notch first win against Dominican Stars

Three players score double digits to lead Vikings to a 20-point victory

RIVER FOREST, Ill. -- After a slow start and a one-point loss in their last game played, the North Park Women's Basketball team had high hopes going into tonight's game against a familiar team in the Dominican University Stars. The Vikings went 17-20 from the free-throw line, powering ahead to a 70-49 victory.

Junior guard Kathryn Keehn started the game hot with two 3-pointers to get the Vikings going as they got out to an early 9-0 lead.  North Park maintained control throughout the first half as Keehn led the way with 8, as sophomore and freshman guards Aliyah Hershberger and Aliesha Peterson pitching in 6 points and 4 points respectively.  These three collectively shot 9-for-10 from the free throw line and 3-for-4 from outside the arc in the first half.  Dominican was able to keep the game close, closing the half down two points 25-23.

North Park ran away in the second half, shooting nearly 40% from behind the arc as a team and 88% from the free throw line.  While the rebounding numbers were quite even, they won the assist-to-turnover battle over the Stars.  Keehn kept the hot hand while also notching a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds.  Hershberger and forward Caroline Long ended with 13 points and 11 points respectively, combining with Keehn to score 41 of the Vikings' 70 on the night.

Senior forward Evelyn Abundes, sophomore big Brooke Panush, freshman guard Naomi Kaskavitch, and Peterson combined for 24 points with 6 points each, offering a balanced Viking offensive attack.  The Vikings held the Stars to 49 points and came out with a win 70-49.
