Vikings Enjoy Reverse Sweep against Stevens to Begin Gargoyle Classic

First reverse sweep for North Park since August 30, 2019

CHICAGO, Ill. – North Park women's volleyball enjoyed a reverse sweep in the opening match of U-Chicago's Gargoyle Classic on Friday night, beating Stevens Institute of Technology 3-2 (17-25, 22-25, 25-20, 25-15, 15-12). The reverse sweep is the first of its kind for the Vikings since August 30, 2019 in St. Louis against Webster University.

North Park caught the error bug in the opening set, suffering 12 mishits while getting blocked three times. Junior outside hitter Adriana Rodriguez posted four kills and five digs while sophomore libero Carolina Aviles also added five digs.

Unfortunately, North Park's 25-17 first set loss was followed up with a 25-22 loss in the second. With a sweeping loss looming, the Vikings had to buckle down.

Senior defensive specialist Teiya Alagar aced the Ducks and the Vikings added two more points on kills from junior utility player Debbie Dinkel and sophomore outside hitter SaeAuna Reynolds 3-1.  Stevens would knot things up at 5-5 following a handful of North Park errors but kills by Rodriguez, junior middle blocker Rhianna Huebner, and senior setter Christina Gatta put the Vikings back on top, 8-5.

The two teams would stalemate again at 13-13 and 14-14 but inconsistent attacking by Stevens kills from Rodriguez, freshman middle blocker Meg Rothermel, and Dinkel, and an ace for sophomore Abby Ames gave the Vikings a 25-20 third-set win.

North Park enjoyed their largest margin of victory in the fourth set despite hitting only .081. Dinkel and Huebner each had a pair of block assists in the set while Gatta posted seven digs and nine assists. Rodriguez and senior setter Jenna Jones added service aces as North Park cruised to a 25-15 win.

A reverse sweep appeared to be off the table when Stevens rattled off six of the first eight points. The Ducks would keep their lead until the two teams switched sides, seemingly kicking the Vikings into gear. Next, Rodriguez, Gatta, and Reynolds all posted kills to tie things up at 9-9. A Stevens attack error and another ace for Ames gave the Vikings their first lead of the set before kills by Dinkel and Reynolds and a pair of Ducks errors completed the reverse sweep, 15-12.

Quick Hits:

  • Rodriguez leads the way with 18 more kills
  • Vikings total 11 aces: Rodriguez (3), Jones (2), Alagar (2), Ames (2), Gatta, and junior libero Delaney Lynch (1)
