North Central Overcomes Early Deficit to Defeat Vikings

CHICAGO, Ill. – North Park baseball played out their final home game of the season on Friday afternoon, dropping the CCIW matchup 5-3.

Viking starter Bobby Bartlett got the first two outs of the games before a pair of ground ball singles and a walk filled every base in the first inning. However, Bartlett induced another groundball headed for the 56 hole. Before it got through, freshman third baseman Rylan Kawakami laid out, popped to his feet, and skipped a throw to first base which was dug out by senior first baseman Jim Zay, getting the Vikings out of jam.

North Park worked some two-out magic in their half of the first, following sophomore shortstop Reece Arakaki's leadoff single. Sophomore left fielder Nathan Sommerfeld legged out an infield single, moving Arakaki to third. Next, after a failed pickoff attempt to score Arakaki, sophomore center fielder Alex DiVito lined a single into center, scoring Sommerfeld.

The next four innings featured scoreless baseball, as Bartlett and NCC starter Ryan Behling kept their opponents' offenses at bay.

In the fifth inning, following two quick outs, junior second baseman Justin Swanson walked and promptly swiped second. After Sommerfeld was plunked, DiVito came through clutch once more, skipping another single up the middle to put NPU up 3-0.

However, in the top of the sixth, the Cardinals mounted a comeback on four hits, including a John Michael Scumaci, and an infield error to tie the game at 3-3. NCC then captured its first and final lead of the game in the top of the eighth when the Vikings committed two more infield errors and Joe Hamilton cracked an RBI single. Cardinal closer Nolan Shannon did his job in the ninth, sitting the Vikings down in order for his fourth save of the season.

Quick Hits:

  • DiVito goes 3-for-4 with a double and pair of RBI
  • Joseph Perona the only other Viking with a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4
  • Swanson and Perona each with a stolen base
  • NCC starter Behling punches out nine in his six innings pitched, allowing only one earned run
  • Bartlett further lowers his CCIW ERA, allowing just one earned in 5.2 innings, K'ing three
