NASHVILLE, Ill. – Thanks to quality shooting inside the paint and at short distances, the North Park men's basketball team enjoyed a 73-53 win over Alfred University (4-6) on Friday afternoon. The Vikings shot 50% from the field, making 29 of 58 shots.
The Vikings and Saxons went tit for tat to through the first seven minutes of the game, trading scores back and forth to the tune of a 7-6 North Park lead. Representing the first scoring run of the game, senior guard Davante Robinson knocked down a free throw for the seventh NPU point before junior guard TJ Gardner's fastbreak layup put North Park up 9-6. Next, freshman guard DJ Wallace added a steal before transitioning a fastbreak layup and burying a three-pointer to extend the Viking lead to 14-6. The Saxons responded with a trey ball of their own before junior center Phil Holmes, Jr. had a fastbreak layup and senior guard Quillin Dixon sent in a three, giving the Vikings a double-digit lead, 19-9, with 10 minutes left in the first half.
Alfred would close the gap to nine points later in the half, but this was as close as they could get to the Vikings through the remainder of the game. North Park shot 14-for-27 (51.85%) in the second half, utilizing 40 points off the bench throughout the game. The Vikings also forced the Saxons to turn the ball over 22 times while blocking 5 of Alfred's shots en route to the 73-53 win.
