Lots of Baseball on Saturday, Vikings Fall to Texas Opponent

Swanson with four hits, including two doubles

GEORGETOWN, Tex. – The North Park University baseball team opened the 2022 season with nine hours of extra-game action on the campus of Southwestern University Saturday afternoon. The Vikings fell to the Pirates in both games, forcing extras in game one.

The first runs of the season for North Park were scored in the third inning when freshman center fielder Carlos Martinez drew a walk before senior catcher Ranko Stevanovic doubled him home on a double to center field. Next, sophomore second baseman Justin Swanson drove a single through the left side, scoring Stevanovic.

Southwestern marked runs in the third and fourth innings, tying the game at two runs each.

North Park regained the lead, scoring on pased balls in the fifth and ninth innings and an infield error in the seventh inning. However, some timely hitting by the Pirates in their would-be final trip to the plate forced extra innings.

Once more, the Vikings put themselves in a position to win as junior Bobby Bartlett plated Stevanovic on a perfectly placed bunt up the third-base line. Yet the Pirates neutralized the Vikings' run in their half of the 10thwith an RBI single of their own. Southwestern ended the five-and-a-half hour game with a 12-inning RBI single into right field, walking off with a 7-6 win.

A quicker game two featured a six-run third inning for the Pirates, who dumped eight more runs on the board in the sixth inning. North Park's runs were scored on an RBI single by junior Daniel Marion, a passed ball, an RBI double to left center for Swanson, and RBI groundout for Stevanovic. This would not be enough for NPU as the Vikings fell in their first doubleheader of the season, 14-4.

Quick Hits:

  • Four hits, two doubles, for Swanson
  • Two doubles for Stevanovic
  • First career hits for Alex DiVito, Daniel Marion, and Reece Arakaki
  • Sund holds Pirates to just two hits, fanning five, in his three innings of work
  • Bartlett surrenders one earned run, strikes out four, in his game two start

What's Next?

North Park (0-2) heads to Striplin Field in Birmingham, Alabama next Saturday, February 26, for a three-game weekend. The Vikings start their trip with an 11:00 AM game against Centre College before facing Dominican (IL) later in the day.
