Vikings Drop First Game of CCIW Tourney

NAPERVILLE, Ill. -- The North Park University baseball team couldn't overcome an early five-run deficit in their first game of the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) tournament, falling to Carroll University, 6-2.

Carroll scored two runs in the opening frame off an RBI double and a wild pitch and added three more in the third inning on a two-run single to right field and an RBI single to left. The pioneers tacked on one more in the fifth inning on another RBI single before the Vikings finally got on the board in the sixth inning.

Senior center field Jared Cantu got the inning going with a single to center field before CCIW Hitter of the Year Jake Reinhardt followed suit to put runners on the corners. Next, Reinhardt swiped second base before senior designated hitter Justin Woolbright brought Cantu home on an RBI single through the right side.

North Park got one more back in their final trip to the plate when senior left field Brandon Davis singled and sophomore first baseman Bobby Bartlett drove an RBI single up the middle. Unfortunately, the Vikings fell short in the 6-2 defeat.

FINAL: Carroll 6, North Park 2

Quick Hits:

  • Reinhardt and Davis both go 2-for-4
  • Junior right-hander Brendan Russ tossed two innings of one-hit, three-strikeout shutout relief
  • Sophomore right-hander Julian Ledezma also had a scoreless inning of work
  • Carroll's Curtis Sheahan kept the Viking bats quiet, punching out eight and allowing no extra-base hits in 7.1 innings of work
