Vikings Take Down Titans on Senior Night

15 kills for Armando Quinones in the 3-0 win

Chicago, Ill. – The North Park men's volleyball team downed Illinois Wesleyan University by a scored of 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-13) Wednesday night at NPU Gymnasium. Senior players Frank Mauigoa, Phillip Duros, and Colin Wong were honored pregame for their contributions over the past few years.

It was all Vikings in the early going as North Park ripped out to a 7-0 lead capped off by an emphatic block from Johnny Euler and Teddy Gedville. After Michael Eastman grabbed a point for IWU, the Vikings went on another run, this time for four straight points, capped off by a block from Gedville and Duros. With the 11-1 lead, North Park withstood minor runs from the Titans and a kill from Erik Bullard capped off a 25-20 set win.

The second set was much more of a seesaw with Illinois Wesleyan constantly responding to Viking kills. The Vikings were down 18-17, but a kill from Emmanuel Eugene and a block from Eugene and Euler flung North Park back in front. Wesleyan clawed the game back to a tie at 21 before Eugene tallied another kill to put the home squad back in front. After an Armando Quinones kill, and an error by the Titans, North Park turned back to Quinones to win them the set 25-21.

The third set started close, and the two squads were locked at eight before the rally caps came on for the Vikings. Seven straight points from North Park capped off by a Euler and Gedville block put the hosts in firm control at 15-8. After a Titan point, North Park scored anther four straight capped off by a Bullard kill, the Vikings found themselves up 10. Eventually, on match point, Weslyan hit a serve long to finalize a 25-13 third set win for North Park.

  • All-time North Park digs leader Colin Wong led the Vikings with 12 digs on the day.
  • Erik Bullard tallied nine kills to go with 10 digs.
  • North Park totaled eight blocks on the day with four from Johnny Euler and three from Teddy Gedville.
  • Gedville also finished with 28 assists for the Vikings.

North Park (7-5, 4-4 CCIW) head to Rock Island, Illinois for a clash with Augustana College (7-4, 6-2 CCIW) on Saturday, March 20th. That game with start at 3 p.m. at the Carver Center.
