BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- In a College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) showcase of some of the best pitchers the league has to offer, the North Park University baseball team prevailed, earning a 2-1 win over Illinois Wesleyan University on Tuesday afternoon.
Titan ace Quinn Gudaitis toed the rubber in the opening night of CCIW action, while Viking ace Ethan Sund got the start for North Park.
Both Gudaitis and Sund kept their opposition quiet through four innings of work, with the most exciting at-bat arriving in the first inning when Viking shortstop Jake Reinhardt battled a 14 pitch at-bat against Gudaitis. Viking reliever Tyler Banks entered in the fourth inning, recording an unconventional three strikeouts and a flyout due to a sharp breaking ball that scurried to the backstop.
The scoreless innings of baseball ceased in the fifth inning when Jared Cantu walked and stole second, Logan Peters walked, and Jake Reinhardt was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Ranko Stevanovic. With two outs, Stevanovic drove a two-run single into the outfield, as the Vikings captured a 2-0 lead.
Banks kept the wind in the Vikings' sails with a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the fifth – two strikeouts and a groundout.
Illinois Wesleyan squeaked out a run in the bottom of the sixth on a wild pitch, but that was all the Titan offense could manufacture. Senior right-hander Justin Woolbright secured the win for Banks, tossing 1.1 innings of scoreless relief to grab his first save of the season.
