Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Alexander Prazuch

Seniors Honored against Carroll as North Park Plays Final Home Game of 2021

The North Park women's soccer team celebrated the careers of four beloved players on Wednesday who will not be returning next year. The Vikings fought hard on behalf of their teammates, but ultimately, Carroll was too much to overcome in a 3-1 defeat to the Pioneers.

The Vikings got on the board first after 30 minutes of play in the 1st half. Clara Wernbo pressured the Carroll defense before dropping it off to teammate Aila Durakovich who converted the try for her 2nd goal of the season. North Park took the lead 1-0 with the help of a sturdy defense and GK Theresa Weiss, who maintained their form throughout the remainder of the 1st and stopped Carroll from getting much going offensively.

Carroll came out of the gates much more aggressive in the 2nd half, and their star Elizabeth Weinberg quickly capitalized on the pressure. A pass from teammate Kaitlyn Zanon set up a Weinberg header that evened up the score—and also gave Weinberg sole possession of 2nd place for goals scored in the CCIW. Lina Bogg, a key cog in North Park's defense, went down shortly thereafter with an injury, and Carroll took advantage by keeping up the same energy that led to the equalizer. Ally Scoma took a shot that rebounded off a North Park defender, and Jo Euland was perfectly positioned for a follow up shot to give Carroll a lead in the 68th minute. Almost immediately following the go-ahead goal, Carroll's Haley Brown scored a stunner from 25 yards out (her first goal of the season) with the help of Kenzie Blau to cement Carroll's lead, now 3-1, with 20 minutes of play remaining.

Carroll's defense held back North Park's late advances and were able to close out the victory as they improve to 3-3-1 in CCIW play and keep their playoff hopes alive. North Park will have a chance to help Carroll out in this regard, as the Vikings take on Augustana (4-3-0) next Saturday for their final match of the season. The Vikings will be the away side in this matchup, but tune in to the stream at 1pm to watch as the girls look to finish strong as they wrap up the 2021 season.
