CHICAGO -- The North Park University men's volleyball team fell to the Illinois Institute of Technology Scarlett Hawks in four sets (19-25, 16-25, 25-16, and 18-25) inside the Helwig Recreation Center on Friday.
The Vikings and the Scarlett Hawks split the first 10 points of the first set. The Vikings notched three of the next four points highlighted by kills by Nathan Nguyen and Daniel Porche making the score 8-6 Vikings. After IIT came back with three straight, the Vikings countered with three straight of their own making the score 11-9 Vikings. The Vikings continued to score points in bunches marking five of the next six points highlighted by a couple of kills by Arthur Barczak and an ace by Nguyen making the score 16-11. However, the momentum shifted to IIT and tallied seven of the next nine points tying the match at 18.
A kill by Porche marked the only other point that the Vikings scored as the Scarlett Hawks captured the final six points to take the first set 19-25.
Set One: IIT 25 North Park 19
IIT started the second set winning 7 of the first 10 points and led 7-3. The Vikings showed some life capturing four of the next five points which featured a kill by Barczak making the score 8-7 IIT. IIT gained the momentum right back notching six of the next eight points and grew their lead to 14-8. After IIT lead 22-13, The Vikings scored three straight highlighted by kills by Frank Mauigoa and Nguyen closing the gap to 22-16.
IIT came back with three straight points and defeated North Park 16-25 in the second set.
Set Two: IIT 25 North Park 16
The Vikings attacked right from the get-go in the third set recording 7 of the first 10 points. During that stretch, Jackson Goo and Maiugoa both registered kills. The Vikings kept the momentum going tallying 6 of the next 10 points making the score 13-7. The Vikings consistently continued their scoring ways and recorded 6 of the next 10 making the score 19-11. Porche, Mauigoa, and Barczak all posted kills.
IIT only mustered five more points as the Vikings rolled to a 25-16 set three victory.
Set Three: North Park 25 IIT 16
After the Vikings scored the first two points, IIT rattled off fourth straight points. The Vikings came back with four straight points of their own highlighted by kills by Goo and Barczak. The Vikings and Scarlett Hawks traded the next five points making the score 9-7. After North Park took a 14-10 led, IIT went on a 7-0 run and took the lead at 17-14. After North Park scored a point on a service error, IIT kept the scoring going marking three straight points making the score 20-15.
The Vikings were only able to mark three more points but IIT rattled off four straight points to win the set and took the match 18-25.
Set Four: IIT 25 North Park 18
