CHICAGO, Ill. -- The North Park University women's basketball team opened its 2019-20 season defeating the Buccaneers of Beloit College, 72-40, in day one of the NPU Tip-Off Tournament inside the North Park Gym on Saturday.
The Viking offense put on a show right away, leading by a large margin of 23-3 after one quarter of play. Senior guard Angelina Villasin led the Vikings with six points.
North Park tallied the first 11 points of the second quarter highlighted by a three-pointer from junior guard Sinead Molloy and four points by sophomore guard Jacki Rapp. With a significant 36-5 lead, the Buccaneers scored seven of the last 10 points as the Vikings took a 39-12 lead going into the half. Rapp led the Vikings with seven points and sophomore center Josie Summerville led the team with four rebounds.
Halftime: North Park 39, Beloit 12
The Vikings came out of the half scoring seven of the first 11 points, highlighted by a three-pointer from sophomore guard Emily Czuhajewski, making the score 46-18. After the Buccaneers scored the next four points, sophomore guard Lauren Lee stalled that run with a layup to move the score to 48-20. The Buccaneers scored eight more points in the third quarter but trailed by a wide margin, 54-28.
North Park started the fourth quarter by scoring six of the first seven points to maintain a commanding lead. After two Buccaneer free throws, junior guard Tyra Walker laid one up to push the score to 62-31.
Beloit only could muster nine more points, as the Vikings secured its first win of the season handily, 72-40.
