Vikings win NPU Tip-off Tournament Championship

Johnson and Villasin earned All-Tournament Team Honors

CHICAGO, Ill. --The North Park University women's basketball team concluded play at the NPU Tip-Off Tournament defeating the Coe College Kohawks, 72-47, inside the North Park Gym on Sunday. 

The Vikings started the first quarter with back-to-back lay ups by sophomores Jayla Johnson and Josie Summerville opening a 4-0 lead.  After a free throw by Coe, Johnson extended the Viking lead with another lay-up making the score 6-1.  Coe would tie the score at 12-12, but the Viking defense only allowed two more points through the first quarter, scoring 10 of their own, to hold a 22-14 lead.

First Quarter: North Park 22, Coe 14

The Kohawks started the second quarter tallying the first five points to inch close at 22-19, Vikings.  The Vikings completed their first field goal of the second quarter at the 4:17 minute mark on a lay-up by Johnson, following afree throw by senior Angelina Villasin, to move the score to 25-19.  After a Kohawks free throw, Villasin and sophomore Jacki Rapp marked back-to-back three-pointers, extending their lead to 31-20.

The Vikings outscored the Kohawks 7-6 the rest of the half, securing a double digit lead before the break in action.

Second Quarter: North Park 38, Coe 26

Coe started the third quarter by tallying the first five points until sophomore Zakiya Newsome made a lay-up, making the score 40-31.  The Vikings then scored the next eight points, highlighted by three points from Villasin, as North Park began to pull away with the game.

The Vikings ended the third quarter on a 10-7 run, highlighted by a three-pointer from sophomore Emily Czuhajewski, to lead by 20 going into the final quarter.

Third Quarter: North Park 59, Coe 39

At the start of the fourth quarter, North Park continued their hot streak with eight unanswered points. Coe scored its first field goal at the 5:49 minute mark, but the Vikings allowed just five more points to earn a dominant win, 72-47.

The Vikings (2-0) will host another tournament this coming weekend, welcoming Buena Vista, Elmhurst, and Olivet on Friday, November 22 and Saturday, November 23.  Tipoff for the first game -- Elmhurst vs. Olivet -- is set for 4 p.m. The Vikings will follow at 6 p.m.
