CHICAGO, Ill. – The 18th-ranked North Park University men's soccer team outlasted the North Central College Cardinals, 2-1, on a down-pouring Saturday evening at the Holmgren Athletic Complex.
North Park threatened early in the match, as junior midfielder Gianfranco DeCarne had a corner kick in the first minute while sophomore Angel Barriga, junior Erlend Kemkers, and freshman Niclas Holgersson all fired unanswered shots. However, the Vikings would have to wait a few more minutes to get their first goal of the match.
In the 12th minute, sophomore midfielder Ulrik Lund bounced a pass off the North Central defense towards a streaking Shatil Khoury. Racing to the ball, the junior midfielder from Jarna, Sweden headed the ball past Cardinal keeper Marco Soto into the top-left corner of the net for his first goal of the season.

The Cardinals created some momentum after the goal, sending in a pair of shots and corner kicks. However, any traction the North Central offense was gaining was curtailed by a 15-minute lightning delay.
Despite 24 shots - 18 for North Park, six for North Central – in the first half, Khoury's goal would be the lone score of the half as the Vikings led the Cardinals, 1-0, at halftime.
Halftime: North Park 1, North Central 0
After celebrating its seniors and attempting to dry off at halftime, North Park wasted little time scoring in the second half.
After North Central's Soto played the ball out, DeCarne bolted in to dispossess Spencer Wiese. With plenty of room to work, DeCarne fired consecutive shots on goal. The first was saved by a diving Soto, but DeCarne's follow-up shot found the back of the net for the Vikings' second goal of the match.
North Central would catch a break a few minutes later, as Alexis Flores and North Park's William Bostrom-Rydfjall collided heads inside the box. The officials deemed the accidental contact a foul and awarded Flores with a penalty kick. Flores converted on the penalty kick goal, cutting the North Park lead in half.
Thankfully, despite three unanswered shots by the Cardinals in the last five minutes of regulation, the Vikings would hold on to secure the 2-1 victory.
Final: North Park 2, North Central 1
