North Park men's soccer clinches third-straight CCIW title

The Vikings round out their regular season against rival Wheaton College this coming Saturday

CHICAGO, Ill. -- The 15th-ranked North Park University men's soccer team clinched its third-straight College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) title with a 2-1 win over Carroll University on Wednesday night.

The first 12 minutes of the match was largely a stalemate, as neither the Pioneers nor the Vikings took a shot or committed a foul through the 12th minute.

North Park would crack the scoreless tie in the 28th minute on one of the more impressive goals of the season. Freshman defender Arian Cindahl found fellow freshman Niclas Holgersson across the pitch, 20 yards out from the goal. With the pass arriving waist high, Holgersson took a roundhouse shot that snuck inside the right post for his third goal of the season and first of the match.

The Vikings tacked on another goal minutes later when junior midfielder Peder Olsen found junior forward Shatil Khoury in prime real estate, just outside the box. Khoury took a few more steps and fired a shot that was deflected by the Carroll goalkeeper. Corralling the deflected shot, freshman midfielder William Sandkvist took advantage of the open net to add the Vikings' second goal in the 30th minute of the match.

Carroll's Julius Marks cut the Vikings' lead in half in the 38th minute, maneuvering the North Park defense before sending a high shot into the back of the net for his fourth goal of the season.

This would be the last goal of the half, as North Park held a one-goal lead going into halftime.

HALFTIME: North Park 2, Carroll 1

The offense for both teams would slow down in the second half, as the Pioneers and Vikings totaled just nine more shots in the rainy conditions.

Thankfully, a scoreless second half would lift the Vikings over the Pioneers as North Park clinched its third-straight league title.
