CHICAGO, IL - The North Park University Men's Soccer team claimed the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin title over North Central College (8-7-1, 5-2-0) on Wednesday night. After a short delay, North Park and NCC took the field at 8:00 PM ready to battle for the CCIW title. The energy around the stadium was at an all-time high with the faithful North Park fans braving the chilly, late-night game to show their support.
North Central took it to North Park in the early minutes of the first half as they forced two corner kicks paired with a couple headers which were both saved by Mathias Stulen. After NCC's offensive pressure died down, NPU came to life. Senior Carel (Kuzona) Kawale launched the first shot of the game, followed by two more from Erik Lundeen all within three minutes of each other. As the first half began to involve some more back and forth action, powered by four saves from Stulen, Peder Nalum Olsen led one of the most important drives of the game. After a few touches from Olsen and Gustav Ericsson, the ball was taken into possession of the CCIW goal leader Carel Kawale. Staying true to what he has done all year, he ripped a shot past NCC goalie Connor O'Neill, settling into the bottom right side of the net. This kick-started the home crowd and NPU was able to steal the momentum heading into the second half of play.
North Park's offense put on a clinic throughout the second half of the game, out-shooting NCC 14 to 5. Of those shots, two found the back of the net from the feet of Matias Warp and Henrik Roesholt. This took the wind out of North Central's sails and resulted in a 3-0 victory in favor of North Park.
With Wednesday night's win, North Park (14-1-1, 6-0-1) also captured its first CCIW Men's Soccer title since 2006. Following one final conference game on Saturday (10/28), North Park will host the CCIW Tournament semi-final match. The winner will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship.
