Despite scattering 13 hits, senior pitcher Jason Meger was poised Friday night as he earned his fifth victory in his third complete game of the year as North Park defeated visiting Wheaton College 7-5 in CCIW play.
Although he yielded double-digit hits, Meger allowed only one extra base hit and stranded 12 Thunder runners on base as the Viking defense turned three double plays in earning their second-straight win.
After North Park spotted Meger a 4-1 lead after two innings thanks to run-scoring singles from Nate Simons, David Scholz and Cullen Gilbertson, Meger fell into a slight predicament as Wheaton came back with three runs in the top of the third to tie the score at 4-4. But a single run via a passed ball in the bottom half of the third along with Cam Adams' RBI single in the fifth put NP back in control 6-4. Wheaton did trim the lead to 6-5 in the sixth, but Adams came up with his second run-scoring single, a shot up the middle in the seventh, which allowed Anthony Bragg (single) to score.
Both Bragg and Adams finished a near perfect 3 for 4 at the plate. Bragg also had two runs scored and Gilbertson, Simons and Scholz each had an RBI.
North Park (14-21, 5-11) wraps up its three-game set with a doubleheader against Wheaton on Monday afternoon in Carol Stream at 2 p.m.
