A late three-pointer from Carroll's Kyle Kernan snapped North Park's six-game winning streak to start the season Saturday as the Pioneers escaped with an 84-81 victory over the No. 18 nationally-ranked Vikes in CCIW action.
A set play off the top of the key led to Kernan's second trey of the night off the left wing and his 17th point with 1.5 seconds remaining in the contest. North Park had one last chance to tie the game with Juwan Henry's half-court heave, but his shot missed off to the right.
North Park saw its 15-point first half advantage dwindle to a one-point deficit at halftime when Carroll used a 23-6 scoring run over a seven-minute span to move ahead 39-37 on Kernan's first three of the night. A Kernan lay-up then put the visitors ahead 44-43 at the break.
NP started the second half strong as it opened with a 13-2 spurt to pull ahead 56-46 on Henry steal and a jumper, but again Carroll had an answer and countered with a 21-8 run to tie the game at 64-64. After seven ties over the next seven minutes, Carroll captured an 81-79 lead on a Kernan lay-up with 1:08 remaining. The Vikes were able to tie it with a pair of Jordan Robinson free throws with 22 seconds left, but Carroll came up with the game-winner on its ensuing possession.
Henry led North Park with 22 points on 9 of 17 shooting and Colin Lake buried five first-half three-pointers to finish with 17 points. Robinson added a double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds while T.J. Cobbs tallied 11 points and dished four assists. Tanner Zaeske led Carroll with a game-high 27 points.
North Park (6-1, 2-1) returns to action Saturday when it hosts Trine University for a 4 p.m. contest.
