Before its largest crowd of the season, North Park snapped a four-match CCIW losing streak with a spirited 25-19, 22-25, 25-20, 23-25, 15-12 victory over visiting Carroll in the first conference meeting between the two programs since the 1992 season.
A crowd of nearly 400 pink-clad fans packed the North Park Gym Friday night to witness one of NP's most exciting matches of the 2016 season. Led by the combined efforts of 20 kills and 13 digs from Lauren Wiltsie and 13 kills from Reagan Clement, the Vikings broke away from an 11-11 tie in the final set by scoring four of the set's final five points to earn the win.
Celebrating Breast Cancer survivors and helping raise money for the cause through the Susan G. Komen Foundation, North Park used its speed and agility, not to mention a sensational defensive effort to earn its second win in the last four matches.
After a fourth set that just slipped out of the Vikings hands in the waning stages despite a 22-20 advantage, neither team could grasp the upper hand in the fifth as each team traded point for point in the early going. North Park moved ahead 6-4 after a Niki Ahlstrand service ace, but Carroll immediately responded with three-straight points to move ahead 7-6 on an NP hitting error. Two straight Viking points put the hosts back in front at 8-7, but again the Pioneers had an answer – this time using a three-point swing – to move ahead 10-9. It wasn't until Wiltsie's kill off a Kajsa Meyer assist that the Vikings took control for good.
Defensively five different Vikings finished in double-digit digs led by 25 from senior Karen Rosales. Sarah Hua-Pham added 17 and both Mia Riccolo (11) and Meyer (10) finished in double-figure digs as well. Dana Voltolina led Carroll with 12 kills.
North Park (7-17, 1-4) looks to continue its conference momentum Oct. 21 when the Vikings travel to Augustana College for a 7 p.m. match.
