Led by a balanced scoring attack, North Park rebounded from a tough CCIW opener last Saturday and bounced back with an 87-79 victory over host Carthage College to even its conference record at 1-1 Wednesday night.
A total of four different players finished in double-figure scoring led by 28 points from junior Juwan Henry. Colin Lake added 18 points as he connected for four three-pointers while Jordan Robinson added 15 points and Darius Brown 13, a North Park career-high for the junior.
North Park started strong as it raced to a 10-3 lead after back-to-back lay-ups from Henry, a lay-up from Robinson and a steal a lay-up from Lake, but Carthage countered with a 19-7 scoring run to erase the deficit and seize a 22-17 lead after a pair of free throws from Brad Kruse with 11:37 left in the first half. Carthage moved its lead to a slim 35-32 advantage with 5:41 left, but Vikings responded with a 12-7 spurt to close out the final 5:28 of the half and held a 44-42 lead at the break.
After a 50-50 tie on a pair of Carthage free throws five minutes into the second half, North Park didn't allow Carthage an advantage thereafter as the Vikings built their lead to as much as 79-68 on a pair of free throws from Michael Hutchinson with 4:28 remaining. Three of four free throws from T.J. Cobbs in the final 30 seconds decided the verdict for the visitors.
North Park took advantage of 46 points in the paint and 17 second chance points off 38 rebounds. The Vikings also forced nine turnovers and generated 12 points off the mistakes. Robinson grabbed 13 rebounds to finish with his seventh double-double of the season and his second in the last three games. Jordon Kedrowski led Carthage with 16 points.
North Park (9-4, 1-1) returns to action Saturday night when it hosts top-ranked Augustana College at 7 p.m.
