North Park wasted little time disposing of Lawrence University in its tournament finale Saturday morning as the Vikings earned a 25-7, 25-12, 25-13 triumph to finish out the Elmhurst Invite with an even 2-2 record.
NP dropped its opening match, a 0-3 decision to Hendrix College Saturday, but the Vikings earned a spirited 3-2 victory over Fontbonne University Friday afternoon after suffering a tough 0-3 setback to St. Mary's College of Indiana in the tourney opener.
Freshman Lauren Wiltsie led the Vikings with 11 kills, and carried a .417 hitting percentage with only one error, against Lawrence University. Emily Farwell added 10 kills and Wiltsie came up with 13 digs as the Vikings evened their overall record to 3-3 heading into single-match play next week.
Against Fontbonne Friday, North Park overcame a rough start, losing two of the first three sets, but bounced back in a big way by holding off a late Griffins' rally in the fourth set to force the fifth and final deciding set.
Despite a 7-2 deficit early in the fifth, NP rallied with an 8-2 scoring run to capture a 10-9 advantage after a Wiltsie kill and a Fontbonne hitting error. From there, the Vikings seized the opportunity and finished out the set and the match by scoring five of the final nine points to earn the win.
Wiltsie finished the match with a team-high 27 kills and 17 digs, while Farwell added 10 kills. Defensively, Karen Rosales came up with 21 digs and Mia Riccolo added 18.
North Park returns to action Wednesday, Sept. 9 when it travels to Aurora University for a 7 p.m. contest.
